In 2003, the Emmet - Chalmers Fire Protection District was awarded a $42,750.00 grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The district has used to funds to purchase firefighter protective gear. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is administered by the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and assists rural, urban and suburban fire departments throughout the United States. These funds are used by the nation's firefighters to increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, new fire apparatus, emergency medical service programs, and fire prevention and safety programs.

The district purchased ten sets of firefighter protective gear, including turnout coat and pants, helmets and boots. This new gear replaces older gear that has had many years of use and was beginning to wear out. All of this gear is essential for firefighting, as it protects the firefighter from the heat and flames of fire. "We were able to buy some of the best gear available. The turnout coat and pants are made with materials that can stand temperatures of more that 1300 degrees. The materials are very durable and offer the best protection from fire," says Fire Chief David Estes.

The district also purchased ten Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBAs). The SCBAs provide the firefighters with breathing air when fighting fire. The new SCBAs will replace existing SCBAs that were more than 10 years old, and reaching the end of their serviceable life. The new SCBAs also have many new features that will enhance firefighter safety. Each SCBA has redundant low air alarms and integrated Personal Alert Safety System (PASS). The PASS device senses the motion of a firefighter and sounds an alarm it no movement is detected, allowing other firefighters to quickly locate a downed firefighter. Communications while wearing an SCBA will be easier with a voice amplifier that will clearly project a firefighter's voice over the radio. The SCBAs also feature a small lightweight bottle that will improve the mobility of firefighters and reduce fatigue. "These new SCBAs are great," says Estes, "They are lightweight, comfortable to wear, and easy to use. The many safety features and the voice amplifiers are a big improvement for us."
