In anticipation of receiving a new fire engine, the district’s Board of Trustees approved constructing a nearly 2000 square foot addition to the existing fire station. The existing station was not large enough to accommodate the new fire engine, which the district expects to received in 2004. Construction of the new addition was completed in May 2003.
The new addition increases the size of the fire station by about two-thirds. In addition to housing apparatus, the new space also creates more space for meetings, storage, and apparatus maintenance. "We were pretty cramped before, the gear was stored right next to the trucks. Now, the gear is stored along the back wall and there is plenty of room for each firefighter," says Trustee Jeff Jones.
The district’s firefighters also volunteered countless hours improving the existing station. New ceiling fans and light fixtures were installed. Firefighters constructed new racks to store the firefighter’s turnout gear. A storage closet was constructed and all the walls were patched and painted. "The firefighters have spent several weekends at the fire station working to improve it. We are very proud of the work we have done," says Fire Chief David Estes. All of the improvements to the existing station were done by the firefighters and paid for by the Firefighter’s Association.
